Canada Goose Prevention – How To Keep Canada Geese Away from Yard or Pond?

There are quite a number of effective methods one can employ to keep Canada geese away from their yards or ponds, with the best ones depending on the size of your property and what materials you might have easy access to. Take a look at the following measures and hopefully, you’ll find a couple that suit you.

Dog Keeping

Keeping any breed of dog can be a great deterrent for geese. Dogs present a natural predator for these birds, and so the presence of one will make them very uncomfortable in an area. Be sure that your dog or dogs are able to access the geese at least 5 times a day so that the geese are made sufficiently uncomfortable to want to move away.

Barrier Fencing

In the case of ponds, creating a string or wire barrier can effectively keep these birds away. Make a two-line barrier, with the first one rising to about 6 inches upwards and the second one reaching up to 18 inches above ground level. The two-line system prevents them from simply stepping over the barrier.

Noise

Loud and unexpected noises startle geese considerably, but you have to pick the right kinds of noises for this to be effective. Air horns, leaf blowers, ATVs, and many types of farm machinery have all been proven to be effective Canada goose repellents. Be sure to change them up regularly so that they do not become accustomed to the noise.

Do Not Feed Them!

This might seem like an obvious point, but it’s an important one to note. Canada geese very quickly come to prefer places where they get food and handouts from people, making them extremely hard to disperse from the area. They also lose their natural fear of human beings, making them nest even closer to people and become more aggressive towards them. Get your neighbor and community at large to strictly enforce a no-feeding policy when it comes to these birds.
